The invention of action ballet, owing to the genius of French choreographer Noverre, consecrates the total emancipation of dance - the movement is now just as powerful as the spoken word. Rivalling with Gluck, Noverre imagined ballets on the most ambitious subjects. While he maintained the wonderful episodes, sparkling costumes and impressive machinery effects of the baroque style, he was above all trying to render emotions in all their subtlety, from the most tender love to the most murderous rage, an early announcement of the romanticism to come.
