Nel prossimo fine settimana si prevede che la circolazione a Roma sarà difficile causa neve e possibile ghiaccio sulle strade.

Il Teatro della Memoria, in accordo con la Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio, ha deciso di rinviare lo spettacolo di musiche da ballo americane dell’Ottocento programmato per la prossima domenica 5 febbraio. La nuova data – presumibilmente in aprile – verrà comunicata appena possibile.

The students of the Accademia Nazionale di Danza and of the Conservatorio di Benevento in a joint Historical Dance class 

Guided by Professor Antonella Moles, teacher of Harpsichord and Ensemble Music for Historical Instruments, the students of the”Nicola Sala” Conservatory of Music at Benevento have attended a lecture in Historical Dance held by Professor Claudia Celi for the Classical Dance course – second grade – at the National Dance Academy in Rome (Italy). The music students have performed the live accompaniment to the dancers; the latter have shown several dance forms of the historical repertory, underlining their social context. The lively exchange came to a close with collective dances by the students of both Institutions.

Gli studenti dell’Accademia Nazionale di Danza e del Conservatorio di Benevento in una lezione congiunta di danze storiche

Accompagnati dalla Professoressa Antonella Moles, Docente di Clavicembalo e di Musica d’Insieme per Strumenti Antichi, gli studenti del Conservatorio di Musica ”Nicola Sala” di Benevento hanno partecipato alla lezione di Danze Storiche tenuta dalla Professoressa Claudia Celi per la classe del 2° Triennio indirizzo Danza Classica. Gli allievi strumentisti hanno accompagnato dal vivo l’esecuzione dei danzatori; questi ultimi hanno mostrato alcune forme del repertorio antico sottolineandone il contesto storico. Il vivace scambio didattico si è concluso con alcune danze collettive che hanno visto danzare fianco a fianco gli studenti delle due Istituzioni.

While looking through the National Trust Collections I came across something interesting. This robe above, dated 1785 - 1795 from the Snowshill Wade Costume Collection stood out very much to me because I’ve never seen anything like it before.

The reason I was so surprised by it is because of the fabric. I’ve never before seen an extant garment made up in a toile de Jouy type fabric before, and thus I’ve always thought it was a fabric used strictly for decorating purposes. I wouldn’t have been so surprised if it was a pair of stays or a pocket that could have been made from scraps, but an entire robe definitely seems unusual to me. The print also seems very large and more suited for massive drapes or something rather than clothing.

Any thoughts on this dress and its unusual fabric? Have you seen any other garments made of toile de Jouy?

So far the information is often scarce, the photos are often small or of bad quality, and the clothes are often badly mounted or not mounted at all. Still there’s lots and lots of great stuff to see, and the search function is great, except for the fact the session times out if you leave it too long.

The 24th edition of the concert series Musica & Musica, organized by the Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio, features in its section Suoni Nel Tempo a program of dance music with the Orchestra da Ballo de Il Teatro della Memoria, an ensemble led by Andrea Toschi and specialized in the performance – supported by research on the original arrangements – of the typical Salon Orchestra repertory.

The concert will present some of the compositions that obtained greatest popularity in U.S. ballrooms during the 19th Century, as attested by dance manuals and instrumental editions that survive in American libraries. The program features composers such as Arthur Sullivan, Scott Joplin and John Philipp Sousa besides others less known but likewise meaningful artists. The orchestra – a «variable geometry» ensemble ranging from four to twelve instruments – will appear in a basic formation with Fabio Consiglio (violin), Yvonne Fisher  (clarinet), Paolo Tagliapietra (pianoforte) and Andrea Toschi (bassoon).

Because of the Carnival season, a special musical afternoon will be offered: everybody in the house – including those without previous dance experience – will have an opportunity to join the dances and learn the steps under the guidance of the masters of Il Teatro della Memoria.

ATTENZIONE – SPETTACOLO RINVIATO CAUSA NEVE A ROMA Domenica 5 febbraio a Roma il pubblico potrà danzare sotto la guida degli artisti de Il Teatro della Memoria

Curata dalla Scuola Popolare di Musica di Testaccio, la rassegna Musica & Musica – giunta alla sua ventiquattresima edizione – presenta nella sezione Suoni Nel Tempo un programma di musiche per danza dell’Ottocento eseguite dall’Orchestra da Ballo de Il Teatro della Memoria, la formazione diretta da Andrea Toschi attiva da molti anni nella riproposta del repertorio tipico della Salon Orchestra attraverso la ricerca degli arrangiamenti originali.

Il concerto – che si terrà domenica 5 febbraio alle 18,00 presso la Sala spettacoli nell’Ex Mattatoio – presenterà alcune delle musiche che nell’Ottocento ottennero maggiore popolarità nelle sale da ballo degli Stati Uniti, come testimoniato dai manuali di ballo e dai numerosi arrangiamenti per diverse formazioni strumentali che si possono trovare negli archivi e nelle biblioteche americane. Nel programma figurano compositori quali Arthur Sullivan, Scott Joplin e John Philipp Sousa accanto ad altri meno noti ma ugualmente significativi di un’epoca. L’orchestra – un ensemble «a geometria variabile» da quattro a dodici strumenti – apparirà questa volta in una formazione essenziale con Fabio Consiglio al violino, Yvonne Fisher al clarinetto, Paolo Tagliapietra al pianoforte e Andrea Toschi al fagotto.

Vista la data in pieno Carnevale, verrà proposto un pomeriggio musicale diverso dal solito: tutti gli spettatori, anche quelli senza precedente esperienza, potranno partecipare alle danze e apprendere i passi sotto la guida dei maestri de Il Teatro della Memoria.

A new resource is available to Music and Dance History scholars 

Within a Padua University basic research program (financed by the Italian Ministry for University and Research) of which Prof. Anna Laura Bellina has the scientific charge, Dr. Rita Zambon has prepared an inventory of the Italian dance librettos in the Rolandi Collection at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, located in the San Giorgio Island in Venice. Filecards can be consulted on the website  www.librettodopera.it featuring a search page and indexes on title, choreographer, music composer and theatre. The dance libretto inventory is part of a wider opera libretto project that includes, besides the Rolandi Collection, also the librettos in the Torrefranca Collection located in the Venice Music Conservatory “Benedetto Marcello”.

Nell’ambito di un programma di ricerca FIRB (Fondo per gli Investimenti della Ricerca di Base del MIUR) dell‘Università di Padova, di cui è responsabile scientifico la Professoressa Anna Laura Bellina, sono stati inventariati dalla Dott.ssa Rita Zambon i programmi di ballo conservati nella Collezione Rolandi della Fondazione Giorgio Cini, situata nell’isola di S. Giorgio a Venezia. I dati sono consultabili sul sito www.librettodopera.it che comprende pagine per la ricerca su diverse chiavi e indici per titolo, coreografo, musicista, teatro. L’inventario dei balli fa parte di un più ampio progetto scientifico dedicato al libretto d’opera che prevede, oltre al fondo Rolandi, l’inserimento dei libretti del fondo Torrefranca situati nel Conservatorio “Benedetto Marcello” di Venezia.

In questa rubrica si tratterà di cinema, letteratura, arte, danza, gastronomia e di tutto ciò che a un certo punto, sospinto dalla razionalità del caso, affiora nella memoria o misteriosamente in essa perdura.

Hai parcheggiato correttamente nella linea blu, hai pagato il biglietto, fino alle 16. Arrivi alle 16 e 01. Contravvenzione: 36 euro, implacabile. La macchina vicino a te, posta sopra il marciapiede in pieno divieto di sosta, ha il invece il parabrezza immacolato. Gli ausiliari possono multare solo chi NON ostruisce il traffico.

E’ una di quelle giornate dove tutto sembra girare all’incontrario. Paradossale. Ma il paradosso è la realtà che le persone normali non riescono a cogliere.

È la lezione di Luis Buñuel tratta dal Fantasma della libertà (1974 – esiste un titolo più bello?). Le nostre azioni sono frutto di convenzioni sociali che noi trasformiamo, per un mero discorso di opportunismo, in regole di comportamento.

Una tale visione può modificare radicalmente il nostro punto di vista. Quello che fino a ieri ci sembrava certo oggi viene clamorosamente ribaltato. Se invece restiamo inconsapevoli, chiusi nel nostro mondo ottuso e conforme, ci ritroveremo all’improvviso attori di una recita di cui non conosciamo il copione.

Siamo sempre a tavola, e siamo sempre in un film di Buñuel: Il Fascino discreto della borghesia
(1972 – esiste un titolo più elegante?). La vita non è mai quella che vogliamo vivere, o forse – suggerisce il maestro spagnolo – non è mai quella che pensiamo di vivere. I nostri desideri sono repressi dalla realtà. Non riusciamo a esprimerci. E forse questo (paradosso del paradosso) è l’unico dato positivo visto l’ egotismo feroce di cui sono composti i nostri desideri.

E’ una sequenza tratta da Estasi di un delitto (1955 – esiste un titolo più conturbante?).

Sogno o realtà? qual è la nostra dimensione più consona, sembra chiederci Buñuel?
Dobbiamo lasciarci andare o vivere controllati incalza il regista surrealista?
E, traslando, l’inquietante interrogativo ai giorni nostri: la multa bisogna pagarla o fare finta di niente?

The Risorgimento in ballet – Episodes between chronicle and legend from the world of the dance – 5th instalment

The 1857 carnival season at the Teatro Regio in Turin had proved a financial fiasco for the impresario and choreographer Domenico Ronzani. So, pressed by creditors, he played his last trump card by sending his wife Bianca, also a dancer, to beg Count Camillo Benso di Cavour – who was Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Sardinia, as well as Minister of Finance – for a bailout. Bianca Berta Valentino Sevierz Ymar – this was the maiden name of Ronzani’s second wife – managed the assignment so well that she not only secured some assistance for the theatre enterprise but also became Cavour’s mistress, subsequently parting from Ronzani who ended his career in the United States.

Camillo regularly wrote love letters to Bianca and bought her a villa on the hills of Turin where he used to take refuge, defying the wrath of his family. This “liaison criminelle” – as Cavour’s brother Gustavo called it – proved however to be solid and lasting. In fact Bianca remained at the statesman’s side until his death in 1861.
