Detailed description of Barbara Sparti's courses:
ITALIAN DANCES OF THE 15th CENTURY
Fifteenth-century balli and bassedanze from the treatises of Domenico da Piacenza, Guglielmo Ebreo, Antonio Cornazano and Giorgio (NY), choosing from Anello, Pizocara, Damnes, the two Figlia Guglielmina, Jupiter/Giove, Gelosia, Grazioso, Graziosa.
We will also attempt to tackle the question of how to interpret bassedanze and differentiate them (from each other), taking as an example Patientia and then some of the bassedanze in the manuscript from Foligno (Pellegrina, Malum, Gioliva, Alessandresca, Reale, Febus).
Particular attention will be given to step technique (including different possibilites of performance, and eventual "flowerings"), as well as to style and interpretation, and to musical questions.
Moresca: We will attempt to reconstruct the moresca of "Jason", composed and directed by Castiglione and performed in Urbino between the acts of La Calandra in 1513.
RECONSTRUCTION AND CHOREOGRAPHY
The class will work more in depth on dances introduced in the morning course. For those more advanced students (with experience of repertoire and reconstruction), we will attempt to reconstruct some less well-known dances (Ingrata, Pregioniera), or more "problematic" ones, such as. Mignotta, Corona, Duchessa (ms Siena).
Students may bring particular problems or questions to the class, including their own suggestions for dances to reconstruct.
There will also be the possibility to reconstruct--from contemporary chronicles--one of the most popular moresche (of the "rustics") from the 15th century.
From 21-23 July Cecilia Nocilli will teach a practical and theoretical Seminar (for intermediate and advanced students) on 15th-century Spanish dances.
The 15th-century Spanish Choreographic Style: The Cervera Manuscript
The Seminar will be a practical and theoretical study of the Cervera manuscript's dance repertoire in relation to that of the Italian 15th-century treatises. Particular attention will be given to the difference between the baixa dança mayor and menor and the three parts baja-alta-gioioso
In particolare, si vuole mettere in evidenza la differenza tra la baixa dança mayor e menor e la tripartizione rilevata tra baja-alta-gioioso present not only in the Cervera manuscript but in other contemporary and later Spanish choreographic sources . Therefore, four important points will be developed during the course:
o Technique of Spanish 15th-century dance
o The study and analysis of the choreographic form
o Analysis and problems of reconstruction. Traces of the body of choreographic notation in the Cervera manuscript
o Method of composition of the tenors for the baja and alta danza
Live musical accompaniment will be provided by Rinaldo Valldeperas (pipe and drum) who will also help with problems of the inter-relation of music and dance.
Reference will also be made to the 15th-century French and Burgundian dance style
