This 2nd Early Dance Academy by the Donaires Ensemble at Roquetas de Mar proposes a wide range of workshops on diverse early dance styles, and offers you the opportunity to work with Ana Yepes and with Robin Joly. You can choose which workshops you wish to attend.

Workshop 1 – SPANISH BAROQUE DANCE (10 am – 2 pm)

Initiation to Spanish baroque dance through learning the basic steps, and a choreography set to Vaya de Fiestas by Lully, excerpted from “l’Entrée pour les Espagnols” from the Bourgeois Gentilhomme, as well as some variations (mudanzas) of Pavana and Folías by Jaque.

The work is centered around technique, style and interpretation, as well as the relationship music/dance. Each participant can work at his/her own level, adding arm movements and/or castanets. Please bring your own castanets, if possible.

Ana Yepes teaches Spanish baroque dance according to the Spanish treatises by Esquivel Navarro, Discursos sobre el Arte del Danzado, Sevilla 1642, by Juan Antonio Jaque, El libro de danzar, XVII century, Joseph de Potau and Ferrán, Memoria de las Danças, Barcelona 1701 and by Pablo Minguet, Explicación del danzar a la española, Madrid, 1737.


Workshop 2 – FRENCH BAROQUE DANCE (4 pm - 5:30 pm)

Work on the basic steps according toLe Maître à danser” by Pierre Rameau.

Work on the reconstitution and interpretation of Sarabandes by Pécour, for a woman and a man, on the “Premier Air pour les Espagnols” from Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Work on “Spanish” arms, as well as with castanets is offered according to each participant’s level.


Workshop 3 – SOUTH-AMERICAN BAROQUE DANCE (5:30 pm -7 pm)

Work on the Cachua Serranita from the codex Martinez Compaynon, XVIIIth century, from Trujillo, Peru.

This manuscript presents scores and iconography. Ana Yepes proposes here a choreographic restitution, synthesis of her research on the cachuas of today’s traditional Peruvian dance, and of Spanish baroque dance of the XVIIth century.

Workshop 4 – FRENCH RENAISSANCE DANCE 1 - Discovery (4 pm – 5 pm)

Learning the basic repertory according to the Orchésographie of Thoinot Arbeau, 1588, Langres, France : branles (doubles, simples, coupés, morgués…), bassedanses, allemandes, pavanes and gaillardes ; in connection with the construction and musical interpretation of « danseries ». Workshop open to all.


Workshop 5 - FRENCH RENAISSANCE DANCE 2 - La suite (5 pm – 6:30 pm)

Follow-up of the preceding work for those who wish to further develop their mastery of this style.

Focus will be on the use of an analytical « choreological » approach, involving musical interpretation. Then, writing and practice of a choreographic composition tightly connected to the musical dynamics.





At the same time as the Donaires Ensemble’s 2nd Early Dance Academy, the second edition of Mare Musicum: Early Music and Dance Festival of Roquetas de Mar which will take place July 8th to 14th. It proposes music classes and concerts every night, including a Renaissance Bal and the Terpsichore performance by the the Outre Mesure company, directed by Robin Joly, as well as a concert by l’Orchestre Baroque de Roquetas de Mar.

At the end of the academy, the dance students can choose to participate in the Fin de Fiesta, a show bringing together the work of music and dance students, in the form of sketches using dance and acting on Saturday, July 14th. This will permit dancers to work live with musicians and in public. For the Fin de Fiesta, students of the Roquetas de Mar dance school will join the students of the academy.

Housing: The housing and food is at your charge. In Roquetas de Mar you can share a rented flat with other students, or get a hotel room at a good price. If you wish to have some help searching for housing, we can give you our local contact.
